Hedonisia Hawaii Sustainable Community Rainforest Retreat
Eco-Toilet in Hawaii!
Our Eco friendly Toilet-with-a-Garden View is literally the most photographed room on the property!
Though the toilet itself is a normal flush toilet; it is located in a private tropical garden!
Toilet paper is one of the greatest paper disasters on the planet. Millions and millions of trees die every year so we can wipe our bottoms in a fashion that is not very hygienic. Toilet paper is of course provided but at Hedonisia we do encourage guests to use our built-in bidet "bum washer" which allows you to use less toilet paper as well as to enjoy a "cleaner" feeling that comes from washing instead of wiping!
We are so proud of our eco-toilet and we have had so many great reviews on it that we decided to create our own little video!
The Hedonisia "Eco-Toilet" does not cause or threaten to cause health problems for the following reasons:
- The "Eco-toilet" is a normal flush toilet which can be used without any further instruction.
- Septic is dug to county specifications of 10 fee and capped in concrete.
- Hand washing facilities are 7 feet away from ecotoilet.
- Toilet facilities are cleaned daily with ecofriendly cleaning agents.
- The Ecotoilet has enjoyed 5 years of continual usage without a single health related complaint.
- Due to its semi-outdoor location the eco-toilet reduces the need for room deodorizers and other air fresheners that an indoor toilet often requires. Indoor air fresheners are increasingly linked with health problems. A 2007 study by the Natural Resource Defense Council found that 12 of 14 of the most common household air fresheners include phthalates, which have been linked to health issues. For more information see http://www.nrdc.org/.
We describe our toilet as ‘eco-friendly' for the following reasons:
- At a higher cost to our community, we only use natural recycled septic safe toilet paper
- We have provided a bidet system to encourage use of water for clean-up. The average American uses 52 sheets of toilet paper a day. Most of this is chlorine bleached white paper made from new trees. We even have an educational instruction notice to teach people how to use a bidet system.
- Sewage is treated naturally with Effective Micro Organisms (EMS) that break down organic waste into nutrients and saving the need for removal, trucking and chemical treatment at another location. The EMS solution the we use is a more expensive than chemical treatment but is much more ecofriendly.
- Septic was dug and placed is in a central location of the property not affecting local groundwater or neighbors.
Outdoor Peeing! We allow (and encourage!) both men and women to pee outdoors on the Hedonisia property with discretion (no food gardens!).
Certain tropical plants such as bamboo, coconut, papaya love to be peed on! In our volcanic crater we have planted dozens of banana trees. Bananas are excellent to pee on!
We have also created an eco-friendly Pee Garden! It is female friendly so women can enjoy peeing safely in the great outdoors whilst refreshing a plant and causing less usage of the toilet facilities which means less water from flushing and toilet paper.
