Available Volunteer Positions

Aside from our Eco-hostel activities and our Tropical Farm, we also engage in Web Publishing and are involved with book projects and other forms of social activism in the areas of environmentalism, feminism, gender equality, relationships and religion in the world today. So we are looking for: idealists, intellectuals, college students or simply people who care about this planet who can do part of their Volunteer Activities assisting with our efforts in these areas.

Hedonisia Hawaii can offer Volunteers Indoor Barn Tent Space Acccommodations, Outdoor Sheltered Camping, or one of our small funky rustic "cottages" such as Ocean View, Sunnyside, or Jungle Breeze. All bedding is provided with both options.

Here are the main Details of our Fair-Trade Volunteer Program.

  • Before they start their Volunteer Activity ALL Volunteers are required to stay for at least 3 nights as a Paid Guest. Please Check our Price List for Accommodation Options.
  • Volunteers are expected to do only 2.5 - 3 hours of work a day for one night's accommodation which includes 1-hour Clean-Up Duty.

If you wish to Volunteer at Hedonisia Hawaii please write to us with your Resume or work skills or experience and then please specify which jobs you would like to do. Please note, though some jobs require experience, as long as you have flexibility and a willingness to learn then you can probably work in a number of these areas. Most Volunteers work a little at a number of jobs listed here:

Available Hedonisia Hawaii Volunteer Jobs: (Volunteers may work in some or all of these areas depending on what we are working on at the time. If a Volunteer really wants to work in a particular specialty then please let us know. Otherwise, just be flexible. As long as you are enthusiastic and willing to learn, we are willing to train you!)
1) Eco- Hostel Related Activities
  1. Housekeeping, Kitchen and Maintenance - General Household duties for the Jungle Cottage, the Barn or for the Guest Accommodations. Light Household duties (vacuuming, dishwashing, cleaning, laundry)
  2. Seamstress - Someone who is good with hand sewing or using a sewing machine. We reuse broken tents by sewing them together into patchwork quilts to make interesting new structures with colorful tent windows and doors.
  3. Secretarial and other Office Work Mailing Lists Updates and Maintenance, Answering Email and Telephone Calls, Brochure and Notice Design. Must have working knowledge of either Microsoft Word, MS Excell Spreadsheet, MS Access for Database work, MS Publisher, or Adobe Pagemaker.
  4. Light Construction Work and Eco-Building - We are building small environmentally friendly structures on the property such as tent houses, ecological huts, a natural swimming pool and a yoga/meditation space in our volcanic crater. Ideal for those with experience in various forms of alternative building.
  5. Renewable Energy Installation - We need Volunteers who have experience in the installation of solar, wind powered, biomass or using other renewable or environmental products for Hedonisia Hawaii.
  6. Mural Artist - We love murals and other artistic creations. Any artist who would like to submit examples of their work can do part of their Volunteer Activities doing agreed upon mural or other artistic projects on the property.
  7. Wood Carver - We have scavenged a number of old growth Ohia logs on the property. These native Hawaiian hardwood trees are perfect for carving. Our intention is to have different artists, capable of carving totem poles, work with the magnificent, upright logs we have used as pillars in various structures.
  8. Trail Building & Maintenance - There are a number of trails on the property; jungle path around the rim and into the volcanic crater located on the property which either need to be built or maintained.
  9. Cave (Lava Tube) Explorer (Spelunker) - We have a deep Lava Tube on the property which has not yet been explored. And so we are looking for explorers or spelunkers with the right safety and climbing equipment to map out our Lava Tube.
  10. Carpenter - For repairing, improving and building small carpentry projects as well as assorted shelving and innovative styles of custom furniture. If you like to work with bamboo or recycled materials then we definitely have projects for you!
  11. Painting Projects - We have a number of paint projects where we use recycled paint. We are repainting recycled corrugated roofing after removing the rust and we are painting the inside of the barn white and Sunnyside in pink! So for those of you who find it soothing to paint, we have projects for you!
  12. Vehicle Mechanic - We have a number of vehicles on the property which are in continual need of TLC! You must have at least a good working mechanical knowledge of vehicles. And at least be able to do basic repairs, or maintenance. Car detailing also needed on a periodic basis.
  13. Bus Driver or Bus Mechanic - One of our accommodations is a converted School Bus which we now call the Love Bus. We like to keep it maintained and running just in case we decide to use it as a future RV for island tours.
  14. Eco-Inventor - We are looking for a student or inventor-type person who can build an environmental bicycle powered washing machine. As well, as a bicycle powered TV. The Internet offers many designs. One of the ones that we liked was this described in this article by a student from Humboldt University: "Setting up a pedal powered washing machine". If you feel you can do this design based on your skills then write us!
  15. Accountant and Bookkeeping - Maintenance and Updating Hedonisia Accounts and Bookings. Must be proficient with Microsoft Excel as this is the software we use for our accounting.
  16. Massage Therapists, Bodyworkers or Personal FitnessTrainers - Body workers or Personal Trainers may practice their specialty for at least one day of the week as their Volunteer work. A Volunteer Masseuse will be working on the Managers, Guests and the "Volunteer-of-the-Week" at Hedonisia Hawaii. Depending on the length of the bodywork session the masseuse will also do some light weeding or cleaning to complete their shift.
2) Hedonisia Tropical Farm Volunteer Positions
  1. Organic Gardening & Planting Trees - We are busy filling this land with lush flowers, plants, fruits and trees using natural organic methods. So gardeners, landscapers and WWOOFers are welcome to work on our 4 acres of land with the idea of creating a lush Tropical Eden-like landscape of fruits and vegetables where something is always available to eat!
  2. Landscaping & Maintenance - Our land is very unique. Though only 3.72 acres in size, we have a hill, a crater, thick jungle zones, flat land on two levels and cliffs and hilly slopes throughout the property. As a result, we need landscapers as well as those who know how to use a lawnmower or weedwacker to maintain and landscape the property.   3. Tool Maintenance and Repairs - A Jack-(or Jill!)-of-all-Trades who can maintain tools or equipment such as lawn mowers, weed wackers, chain saw and so on.
  4. Volcano Crater Development - We have a number of plans for our little volcanic crater on the property. One of them is to remove some of the non-Hawaiian "weed trees" and replace them with more native and esthetic plants. As well we need the crater fully explored so we can construct a natural ecological swimming pool.
  5. Professional Tree Cutter - We have a number of giant Albizia trees on the property which are over 100 feet high. These are invasive trees that crowd out other native trees on the property. They need to be felled in such a way as not to threaten the Main House or any other structures on the property.
3) Hedonisia Specialty Volunteer Positions: Hedonisia Hawaii is an Eco-Hostel and Organic Tropical Farm. However our efforts to make this world a little better do not stop there. We also have a very active presence on the Internet. We operate and maintain a number of socially progressive web sites that require continual updates, maintenance and other improvements. Volunteers with a specialty background may work in any of the following areas:
  1. Web Designer - Must be proficient in any of the following: Web Design or at least basic HTML; Creating Online Interactive Email Forms, Javascript, Flash, Dreamweaver, Search Engine Optimization, Web site Promotion or any other advanced skills in web site creation and maintenance.
  2. Flash Programmer - Ability to edit and update flash web sites.
  3. Online Database Designer - Using PHP Script. We are looking for programmers who can create, update or maintain online databases and/or do reports and database analysis.
  4. Writer/Researcher - (This job is ideal for a Liberal Arts Major Student!) - We need writers and/or web researchers for two book projects and three web sites. we are working on. Must have good interviewing and listening skills and an interest in any of the following subjects: sustainable living, environmental philosophy and eco-travel. We also do work on the role of religion in international politics, culture, families and relationships. Liberal Arts Students with majors in either International Politics, Sociology, Psychology, Family Studies, Religion, Humanities or Women's Studies are welcome. Previous writing and editing experience a plus.
  5. Archivist for Digital Files - We have many old photo negatives and other archive material that need to be scanned, organized and filed digitally.
  6. Lawyer/Paralegal or Legal Researcher - With specialties in Business law, Family Law, Civil Rights, Gender Law, Freedom of Speech and International Law. For our various book and web projects.
  7. Social Worker/Sociologist - Must be interested in doing research about Family, Feminism, Sexuality, and Gender Issues for one of our book/web projects.
  8. Architect or Environmentally Minded Architectural Student - to create blueprints or propose designs for changes to existing structures on the property and for the creation of new environmentally friendly structures at Hedonisia Hawaii.

4) Other Available Hedonisia Positions:

  • Hedonisia Hawaii Hostel Manager(s): We are looking for a great couple and/or single person who are computer savvy yet have a friendly manner to do reception and customer service duties to manage Hedonisia Hawaii. We want Managers who are flexible and who like working with people, technology and the land. This position offers a small salary and a great little cottage with an ocean view to live in.
  • Build a Jungle House in a Guava Forest in Hawaii: We are looking for either a Swiss Family Robinson or Robinson Crusoe to build and live in a simple Jungle Hut on a new piece of land which we purchased in Big Island, Hawaii for up to one year. Can be an Individual, Couple or Group
