Nearby Attractions

Some of the wonderful attractions in the Big Island, Hawaii with the approximate distance from Hedonisia Hawaii in either miles or the time it takes to drive or walk there.

Kilauea Active Volcano: 45 minutes drive

Upon leaving Hinalo Street Turn Left at Pohoiki. Then take first left at Leilani Street and drive to the end. (about 4 miles). Turn left again. This is Highway 130. Take it all the way down to the ocean. At this point you have choices. You can either drive straight along the 130 and see the lava flow at the end of the dirt road that came and covered this highway.

There is some still active lava flow which looks beautiful at night. Bring good shoes, plenty of water (its hot here!) and a friend to share the experience with!

Ahalanui Thermal Warm Ponds: 15 minute drive (5 miles)

This oceanside hot spring is exquisite for comfortable, safe swimming. An Olympic-sized pool has been developed where the volcanic geothermal heat rising from the ground keeps the water above 75°F (or approximately 20°C) and the high tide of the ocean renews the pool with fresh ocean water every day. There are lifeguards ( hours vary) that help to assure a safe swimming experience for all. For those who may be nervous about waves and big surf, this is a great spot to start out.

Lava Tree State Park: 5 minutes drive

Towering trees canopy the walking trail that guides your tour of Lava Trees. When the lava came down this slope so long ago it covered the large trees that were growing there forming large lava sculptures that jut from the landscape. The 30 minute hike around the horseshoe-shaped trail gives great views of the Lava Trees as well as many examples of the beautiful variety of blooms which the "Orchid Isle" is known for. This park is also an opportunity to get closer to the large trees that line the roadsides and see how big they really are.

Pahoa Town: 4.2 miles away

This "Hippie New Age" town has a great quirky character. You can satisfy your hunger at any one of the six restaurants, or bring together your own healthy creations from the Natural Foods Store.

This photo on the left was taken at the "Pahoa Spring Time Jamm" when they close the street and have various forms of entertainment as well as ono grinds (really good food.)

One of East Hawaii's Volcanic Steam Vents

Natural Volcanic Steam Vents: 17 minutes drive

You know you're experiencing life on the side of an active volcano when you visit East Hawaii's Steam Vents. These pukas (Hawaiian Holes,) some of which are large enough to fit four or five people, are hot or hotter depending on how active the volcano is. These wonderful, naturally occuring saunas are perfect for sweating out your stresses. For safety's sake go with a friend and plenty of water.

Green Lake in Puna, BIg Island, Hawaii

Green Lake: 16 minutes drive

After driving along the Red Road about 3 miles it is located on the left. It is a little difficult to locate because there is no sign posted and it is on private property but it is a beautiful tropical freshwater lake that is a delight to swim in.

Golden Rule: Tread lightly on the land - its a great place to have a picnic- but pack out anything you pack in.

Kalapana 1990 Lava Flow: 23 minute drive

Or you can jog left to Highway 137 better known as the Red Road and then a quick right. Drive for a few hundred yards and you will come to Uncle Roberts and Verna's - two Hawaiian run establishments that survived the great lava flow of 1991 that erased the village of Kalapana from the map. This lava flow is all around their properties and extends all the way to the sea. Very beautiful lava here with swirls and rainbow colors embedded into the once molten rock.

Entering clothing optional Kehena Beach , Hawaii

Kehena Clothing Optional Black Sand Beach:
34 minute drive

Kehena beach is definitely noticeable on a Sunday when they have naked drumming and dancing all day. There are many cars parked on the side of the road so you know exactly where to stop. But during the week it can be quite quiet and it is easy to drive past the entrance point which is simply marked by a parking lot.

Aerial View of the town Of Hilo, Hawaii

Hilo Town and Airport: 35 minutes drive

The best little town in Hawaii! A cute little downtown with picturesque old buildings perfect for strolling in. Excellent priced restaurants and a great Farmer's Market every Saturday and Wednesday. If you decide to come and visit us at Hedonisia, the closest airport is located here.

Onekahakaha Beach Park: 45 minute drive

This beach in Hilo is perfect for those who are apprehensive about swimming in the open ocean or for those who have small children. The water is mostly very shallow with seawalls to protect from large waves. There are bathroom facilities and showers.

Isaac Hale Surf Park: 8 minutes drive

Recommended for experienced surfers as the shore is too rocky for comfort and the ocean currents can be strong. But it is a perfect place to watch local surfers strutting their stuff. Fishing boats are also launched in this area and if you walk about 4 minutes away from the parking area and along a path beside a beach you'll find a natural hot tub big enough for about six people and roughly six feet at its deepest depending on the tides.
