Hedonisia Hawaii Sustainable Community Rainforest Retreat

The Hedo Jungle Volcanic Crater

It's true. A large section of the Hedonisia Hawaii property consists of a huge volcanic crater. Based on the size of the Ohia trees located in the crater we estimate that it is about 200 years old.

We have already started to explore the crater. In fact we have built a rough trail into the crater which guests are free to use to explore this natural wonder.

Hedonisia Hawaii has a bottomless lava tube on the property

As you enter the the crater you will notice that the air gets steamier and more moist.

There is very little breeze down there. And as you enter you will notice that there are "Lava Tubes" which are basically hollow caves left by the lava as it dried and hardened hundreds of years ago.

Slowly slowly we have cleared the weeds, given care to the native ohia fern and kava in the crater. And now we are creating a banana plantation amidst the native flora.

Spot the person in our Jungle Crater!

Living with PELE the PROTECTOR: The area we live in has the world's longest active flowing volcano. It is 30 minutes drive away. If you are lucky when you visit the volcano you will be treated to an amazing spectacle of Mother Nature. A side of a mountain on fire and slowly oozing into the ocean. Fire and water in a neverending clash of steam!

One of the strange benefits of living under an active volcano is that nobody can build a 5-star hotel here! The kind of massive development that has ruined much of Hawaii's natural beauty is not feasible because there is always the possiblitity that the Hawaiian Goddess of the Volcano Pele, can change her flow and simply cover it with lava!Mojo playing with Pele's Lava - May 2010

As a result there is an abundance of alternative communities; living under Pele; protected by the volcano but with always the possibility that all that we've built can be taken away.

Hedonisia Hawaii's location is classified as Lava Zone 1 which means that we have the highest likelihood of being graced by Mother Pele's volcanic lava flow if she decides to change her path. Living under the shadow of a live volcano is a great exercise in Buddhist philosophy. We love our home and put great care into this community. But we try to live and love without attachment. For it can all be taken away in a flash of volcanic lava.

We enjoy Hedonisia while we can!
